Shambot! » Alex http://www.shambot.com Fri, 04 Oct 2013 21:14:36 +0000 en-US hourly 1 http://wordpress.org/?v=4.1.1 Baseball Cards!?!? http://www.shambot.com/alex/2011-04-09/baseball-cards/ http://www.shambot.com/alex/2011-04-09/baseball-cards/#comments Sat, 09 Apr 2011 22:59:33 +0000 http://www.shambot.com/?p=3206 Today while pet-sitting at my parent’s house, I decided to look through my books of favorite baseball cards. I don’t think I had opened up the box they were in since the turn of the Millennium. To wet your appetite, here’s an awesome Pepsi contest gameboard I had stashed inside there from the late 90’s. I think the idea was to collect bottle caps with words on them, and when you had built the phrase, you won the prize. Due to the pop-culture theme, the phrases had a shelf life shorter than the Pepsi (burn!).

Baseball cards after the break… I’ve picked out some of my favorites. You can see the rest in Picasa.

Sweet Tom Kelly Autographed card.

Check out the awesome label work on this book of cards.

Roberto Alomar was my favorite player (he was inducted into the Hall of Fame this year, which I think precipitated this review of my collection). I have about 110 of his baseball cards. This autograph card was a prize inside a case of 20 packs. Pure luck!

Here’s a super-fancy Roberto Alomar card. In the Mid-90s baseball cards started to get pretty fancy (so that the baseball card companies could increase their profit margins).

This was tied for my favorite with the Slideshow card.

Joe Carter was my 2nd favorite. He hit a walk-off home run to win the 1993 World Series. Only the 2nd player ever to do that. Also, this might be the best baseball card picture ever.

John Olerud was a nerd. However I think this is one of my favorite baseball card designs.

Carlos Delgado actually turned out to be a big deal for awhile. He was a rookie when I stopped paying attention to baseball. He’s a handsome dude

Frank Thomas… sliding like a debutante.

This card was my Dad’s. It’s a 1961 Topps Mickey Mantle. In mint condition they’re worth around $500, but this one probably isn’t in good enough condition to sell.

This was probably high-tech in it’s day (1961).

Some examples of my awesome penmanship. Yes I indexed and cataloged my baseball cards, in fact eventually I got a hold of some awesome MS-DOS software to catalog them on a computer.

I even partake in the oh-so-nerdy process of take picture -> rotate 30 degrees -> take picture -> rotate 30 degrees -> etc. Well, today all the awkwardness pays off because I’ve finally found a software which turns my pieces of panoramas into panoramas. I went through the last 5 years of panorama-shots this morning and picked out and stitched together the good ones. It’s all extremely automatic, which is awesome. The software is Microsoft Image Composite Editor by Microsoft Research. Free, but Windows Only!

Dual Function Design, November 10, 2008
By B. Govern “Bee-Dot-Govern”
This review is from: The Mountain Three Wolf Moon Short Sleeve Tee (Apparel)

This item has wolves on it which makes it intrinsically sweet and worth 5 stars by itself, but once I tried it on, that’s when the magic happened. After checking to ensure that the shirt would properly cover my girth, I walked from my trailer to Wal-mart with the shirt on and was immediately approached by women. The women knew from the wolves on my shirt that I, like a wolf, am a mysterious loner who knows how to ‘howl at the moon’ from time to time (if you catch my drift!). The women that approached me wanted to know if I would be their boyfriend and/or give them money for something they called mehth. I told them no, because they didn’t have enough teeth, and frankly a man with a wolf-shirt shouldn’t settle for the first thing that comes to him.

I arrived at Wal-mart, mounted my courtesy-scooter (walking is such a drag!) sitting side saddle so that my wolves would show. While I was browsing tube socks, I could hear aroused asthmatic breathing behind me. I turned around to see a slightly sweaty dream in sweatpants and flip-flops standing there. She told me she liked the wolves on my shirt, I told her I wanted to howl at her moon. She offered me a swig from her mountain dew, and I drove my scooter, with her shuffling along side out the door and into the rest of our lives. Thank you wolf shirt.

Pros: Fits my girthy frame, has wolves on it, attracts women
Cons: Only 3 wolves (could probably use a few more on the ‘guns’), cannot see wolves when sitting with arms crossed, wolves would have been better if they glowed in the dark.

I would say “at least the Right Wing is getting a sense of humor”… http://www.shambot.com/alex/2009-04-10/i-would-say-at-least-the-right-wing-is-getting-a-sense-of-humor/ http://www.shambot.com/alex/2009-04-10/i-would-say-at-least-the-right-wing-is-getting-a-sense-of-humor/#comments Sat, 11 Apr 2009 01:03:03 +0000 http://www.shambot.com/?p=2408 …however I’m pretty sure most of them don’t really understand what they’re saying. Note that this also makes it pretty hilarious. This should be good next time the “Family/American Values” card gets played.

I don’t generally think it’s good policy to show things that I find on digg to other friends, but I’ll make an exception for this clip.

Google OS? http://www.shambot.com/alex/2008-09-02/google-os/ http://www.shambot.com/alex/2008-09-02/google-os/#comments Tue, 02 Sep 2008 23:53:58 +0000 http://www.shambot.com/?p=1949 Not quite, but I think that that’s what Google is moving towards, with it’s new application Google Chrome. Now I’m not normally a techie guy, but I thought the way they introduced the product to the world was pretty cool (see the link above.)

I guarantee you the driving force behind this program is Google’s dissatisfaction with the way current browsers (firefox, ie, etc.) don’t give web apps the same benefits that local apps have. I don’t think it will happen, but Google’s betting that someday iTunes, Word, and maybe even Final Cut Pro will be web apps.

kay maybe not quite, but still exciting. The Pixies’ “Doolittle” will be available for Rock Band the week of the 24th. The Whole Album! I had originally planned on getting Guitar Hero when I (eventually) got my 360 but this pretty much swings the pendulum the other way. I can’t imagine any album being more fun in Rock Band than Doolittle. More info here.

In other news, I finished modding my Tobo TV Unit with fans. It’s not much to look at but I figured i’d document my progress nonetheless. The pictures, in all their mediocrity, can be found in my “Cooling a Tobo” Picasa gallery. I think that’s all I’ll do to Tobo, however my AC Adapter has a 1A spec, and the fans and controller only use about 0.4A, so I might put some LED’s in there to light up the drawers when you open them or something like that.

New Apartment part(ment) 1 http://www.shambot.com/alex/2008-05-21/new-apartment-partment-1/ http://www.shambot.com/alex/2008-05-21/new-apartment-partment-1/#comments Thu, 22 May 2008 02:32:35 +0000 http://www.shambot.com/?p=1753 So I’ve been kicking around the new apartment since Sunday all by myself. I’ve comitted to getting everything unpacked and settled before Alli comes back from Cancun (my pennance for being that jobless boyfriend who sits around the house all day eating cheez-its and watching CNBC and CSPAN until June 23rd.) I finally got cable and internet today ($110 a month for basic digital and broadband. Anyone else paying this much?) so I will be posting pictures of my unpacking and apartmenting escapades in the coming days. But to tide you over, heres a video of me assembling Tobo, our new entertainment center. Excuse the poor quality. I was struggling with Adobe Premiere long enough to not care about removing redundant and bad frames and such.

Can a person have two soul mates? http://www.shambot.com/alex/2008-05-06/can-a-person-have-two-soul-mates/ http://www.shambot.com/alex/2008-05-06/can-a-person-have-two-soul-mates/#comments Tue, 06 May 2008 14:34:17 +0000 http://www.shambot.com/?p=1742 Short post today. Mostly because it’s contents will make you think I’m crazy/obsessive/creepy.

I’m sure most of you are familiar with my love for XKCD. The author shares my EXACT sense of humor. Sometimes it’s kind of eerie, especially on those occasions where we make similar jokes only weeks apart. Think back to my Jurassic Brunch post, and then check this week’s XKCD out: Forks and Spoons
If you mouse over the image, you see it’s alternate text, which is usually a related joke. To make life easier for you, here it is as well:
“Their biggest mistake was bringing Rachael Ray and Emeril to tour the lab and sign off on the project. That’s when Spielberg caught wind of it.”

A couple of months ago I left the following on a white board in the Computer Science lab:
“O(n) solution to the traveling salesmen problem: Jetpack.”
Which was followed a few weeks later by this XKCD: The Traveling Salesman Problem.

Of course this could all be attributed to the following:
1. Computer scientists aren’t funny.
1a. When a computer scientist is funny, it’s funny to other computer scientists.
2. Computer scientists are almost all exactly alike.
3. The number of possible jokes stemming from advanced topics of computer science are very small.

Christy is about to get her MFA in Metalwork and Jewelry Design from Illinois State University at Bloomington-Normal, and I just went down to visit her and check out her thesis exhibit. Check out Symbiosis, and check out some of the pictures I took of her exhibit after the break.

I also found a number of interesting things on my way to/from Illinois. Pictures of Kitties, Bikers, Furnature, and ‘pf’ words after the break.
